Garabao. Hey. We can just start with your name and what you do. Okay, my name is Garabao Magike and I'm a coach at Penn."},{"start":"01:00:15:24","end":"","text":"Alright, what does being a coach at Penn involve?"},{"start":"01:00:19:00","end":"","text":"Well, it involves three main activities. Can you repeat it back to me? Being a coach involves three main activities. The first one would be training. So we do monthly training on topics that are related to ECD. For the teachers, that would be like storytelling, classroom management, sounds, Lego, re-identify their needs and we train them on that. And that's the first one? Yes, and the second one is... Give it a break between me and you so that you don't hear my voice. So there's two things, training... Yes, the first one was training. And the second thing that we do is we offer hands-on support in the classrooms. So that would mean that I visit the centers that I've been allocated. So I visit usually one a day. And I sit with the teacher in the classroom and I kind of ensure that she implements the stuff that we've taught her. And if they need any extra support, then I'm there to give her one-on-one training if they need to be."},{"start":"01:01:25:01","end":"","text":"And then the third one would be ongoing assessment of the teachers. So as I'm helping her in the classroom, I will also be assessing her and giving her feedback as needed to help her to grow and become a better teacher."},{"start":"01:01:39:22","end":"","text":"Wonderful. I think that was perfect, Karamo. I could be going just a little bit fast. Oh yeah, I do have that problem. So maybe just take it a little bit slower."},{"start":"01:01:49:18","end":"","text":"And you can also tell me the things you assess. And the kind of support you give. So you're telling me that you're giving the support they need. We don't necessarily know what that support is. So just a little more details if you don't mind."},{"start":"01:02:04:20","end":"","text":"But you will start off as a coach. I do three things. Okay, so I should start that over again. Yes, slower."},{"start":"01:02:13:08","end":"","text":"All right, so as a coach, I do three things."},{"start":"01:02:18:00","end":"","text":"First would be training. We do monthly training with the teachers on topics that are related to ECD. So that would be like storytelling, classroom management, discipline, admin, and Mickey-Mats, you know, trainings like that. And then the second thing that we do is to offer them hands-on support in the classroom."},{"start":"01:02:43:00","end":"","text":"I sit with the teacher in the classroom and I ensure that she is implementing the stuff that we teach them in the trainings that we offer them. And the third thing would be an ongoing assessment of the teacher. So I assess her on things like classroom layout, presentation of lessons, morning ring, and if they have enough supplies in the classroom. And if she's struggling with a topic like how to do storytelling, then I'll be there with her in the classroom to help her. And I give them feedback as well. So if I would have asked her to implement something and I come back and I see that she's done it well, then I would give her that feedback that this is you're doing this so good. And this is what we need to focus on now. So yeah, we have an assessment sheet that we use."},{"start":"01:03:33:03","end":"","text":"Perfect. Do you enjoy being a coach, girl? I love being a coach. Yeah, I love being a coach because I'm not just limited to one group of children and say if I was a teacher, which I used to be. So yeah, it gives me a whole broader kind of world. You know, I get to meet many different teachers. I meet different children in different settings and I love it. You know, one thing that makes me really happy as a coach is seeing the teachers implementing the things that we teach them and actually enjoying what they do. You know, we find some teachers who I knew have never been in a classroom and they have no idea what to do. But once we have helped them and you can see them grow, you can even see them grow in their confidence as well. And that just makes me so happy."},{"start":"01:04:19:13","end":"","text":"That was very good. Thank you. I'm going to do just one more. How does it make you feel to see a child develop?"},{"start":"01:04:29:00","end":"","text":"It makes me really happy to see children developing and gaining skills, you know, especially the younger children, you know, seeing a child from baby class and seeing them grow from class to class and seeing that development. It just really makes me happy. As a mother myself, I just can't help but be filled with joy when I see things like that."},{"start":"01:04:55:16","end":"","text":"Perfect. Yeah, I think that's everything."},{"start":"01:05:00:02","end":"","text":"Manik, you happy with that? Yeah. Very good. Very, very good. Thank you."},{"start":"01:05:04:02","end":"","text":"Guys, you know that under us there's these beans."},{"start":"01:05:18:22","end":"","text":"How's the sun? Can you tell me what was in your lunch today?"},{"start":"01:05:22:17","end":"","text":"I had pork ribs, chicken and chips. Are they coming as well?"},{"start":"01:05:35:01","end":"","text":"But also I don't think I'm hearing it via sound. Sorry, you got it all the way down. I'm not sure how to say it. I don't think I'm hearing it via sound."},{"start":"01:05:56:08","end":"","text":"I think this is all we've got. Let's just put this in the floor. Okay, have a seat. Hi, Sam."},{"start":"01:06:06:07","end":"","text":"How are you? Good, thanks. How are you?"},{"start":"01:06:09:07","end":"","text":"We're going to start as we did. What was great about the first interview is you actually did really well. The problem was that it just wasn't specific enough. So we're going to basically do the same interview, but you're just going to give us more details of your answers."},{"start":"01:06:22:09","end":"","text":"And if not, I'll just give you more questions so you can get into those details. I oversee four of our eight support centers."},{"start":"01:06:51:15","end":"","text":"What does the role of a regional manager entail?"},{"start":"01:06:56:04","end":"","text":"Okay, firstly, as I mentioned, I oversee four of our support centers. I manage the staff and I work closely with the school managers."},{"start":"01:07:06:05","end":"","text":"Alright, Penn has three pathways that they work with. I understand that you work on pathway one. Can you tell me what pathway one is and how you implement it? Okay, pathway one, it's working closely with the school managers. With the school managers, I form relationships with them, work the journey with them. We look at the school through school assessment with 115 criteria points as laid out by the Department of Education. We look at that together with them, we see where they are, we understand the school, then we start getting into action and helping them to get closer and closer to compliance."},{"start":"01:07:49:12","end":"","text":"Great. I understand that there are three key things that happen in this pathway."},{"start":"01:07:57:02","end":"","text":"Could you tell me what they are and what they look like? Okay, firstly, there's trainings where we train the school managers and their participants. But my role is to work closely with the managers, so I train them on a quarterly basis. We do business trainings with them to help them to... I lost that."},{"start":"01:08:23:09","end":"","text":"I'm going to go one by one."},{"start":"01:08:26:11","end":"","text":"So I understand... Wait, wait, wait."},{"start":"01:08:39:18","end":"","text":"You said which pathway must I focus on? Pathway one. Within pathway one, we do assessment, training and ruler program. I'm now going to just ask you that in three questions to make it easier for you. So you will give me the line, as pathway one, we implement three key steps. First one is assessment. We're going to talk about assessment. So go ahead."},{"start":"01:09:08:14","end":"","text":"You said how she does that, is pathway one? I'm in charge of pathway one. And what that entails is, firstly, assessment."},{"start":"01:09:35:16","end":"","text":"Okay. As a regional manager, I implement pathway one. Which one?"},{"start":"01:09:43:05","end":"","text":"What do you need?"},{"start":"01:09:49:10","end":"","text":"As a regional manager, I work mainly with pathway one. Where I work closely with the school managers. With the school managers, we do school assessments to determine where the school is."},{"start":"01:10:02:21","end":"","text":"Looking at the 115 points criteria as laid out by the Department of Education standard requirements of an ECT in South Africa. So we do those school assessments. We see where the school is. And then we start working closely with the principal to make sure that they get closer and closer to compliance as possible."},{"start":"01:10:24:12","end":"","text":"We do quarterly trainings with them to help them with their business goals. Because what we are looking at is ensuring that they're able to run efficient businesses."},{"start":"01:10:34:19","end":"","text":"And then we also have a pendula program. With this program, we reward their growth. We reward also when they attend trainings. With those points, they're able to come and buy items that they need for their school. Items such as educational toys, chairs and tables, fire extinguishers for their school."},{"start":"01:10:58:19","end":"","text":"Tell me more about how the point system works in pendula. Okay."},{"start":"01:11:11:07","end":"","text":"The principals and their practitioners are rewarded for attending all our lesson plans and training programs. So they get points and also they are able to get a point when the school grows from one level to the next."},{"start":"01:11:27:13","end":"","text":"With those points, they're able to come to us and buy items that they need for their school. Which items include tables and chairs, include educational toys, include such things as fire extinguishers or mattresses for their children in their care."},{"start":"01:11:44:24","end":"","text":"That was perfect. You just didn't say pendula at all. So if you can give me the same answer but just say, do the pendula program. Their own points, they buy things. Same answer you gave. Just concretize it. I think that's good. So I think you should also just mention that it's a very dignified way of approaching it because it doesn't create dependency. So you don't just give handouts."},{"start":"01:12:09:20","end":"","text":"Give them more boards for doing that."},{"start":"01:12:12:16","end":"","text":"Okay."},{"start":"01:12:14:03","end":"","text":"Do you understand how to bring that in?"},{"start":"01:12:16:22","end":"","text":"Okay. Okay. We'll be ready now. Okay."},{"start":"01:12:20:07","end":"","text":"Okay. We also run a pendula program where we reward the schools or the school manager for putting in an effort when they attend trainings and when their school grows from one point to the next. And with those points that they're able to end, they're able to come back to us and buy items that they need for their school. They may buy items such as tables and chairs, fire extinguishers mattresses and also educational toys. Great. We can just touch with what you said a little bit harder but we can do it as a separate question."},{"start":"01:12:57:06","end":"","text":"The reason we've decided to do it this way is because we want the schools to be empowered about the resources they need. Okay."},{"start":"01:13:05:12","end":"","text":"Okay. Okay. Yeah."},{"start":"01:13:10:01","end":"","text":"That side."},{"start":"01:13:12:17","end":"","text":"They're very far. But yeah, they are loud."},{"start":"01:13:16:15","end":"","text":"So we'll do this one."},{"start":"01:13:18:14","end":"","text":"It's really good. Does she have to go back? No, we can just add this. Okay. Because we can even cut the view roll and put it later."},{"start":"01:13:37:16","end":"","text":"Yeah. They won't. Yeah. Oh, no."},{"start":"01:13:43:01","end":"","text":"I don't know. I don't know. I think I'm sure you said rather we'd rather we be safe. Yeah. Yeah."},{"start":"01:14:00:00","end":"","text":"So the reason we do this program. Okay."},{"start":"01:14:10:21","end":"","text":"Yes, good. Okay."},{"start":"01:14:14:06","end":"","text":"All right. The reason we do this pendulum program is because as an organization, we don't believe in giving handout. But we believe that if people are making it. Oh, gosh."},{"start":"01:14:26:16","end":"","text":"Oh, gosh."},{"start":"01:14:28:24","end":"","text":"We are not your friends. Come on. Stay right where you are. Yeah."},{"start":"01:14:37:08","end":"","text":"Okay."},{"start":"01:14:41:15","end":"","text":"As an organization, we do not believe."},{"start":"01:14:48:10","end":"","text":"Okay."},{"start":"01:14:51:03","end":"","text":"Okay."},{"start":"01:14:52:08","end":"","text":"As an organization, we don't believe in giving handouts. We try to reward people or the schools for really making an effort which will also encourage them to attend trainings, to attend lesson-planings because they know that with the points they get, they are able to buy things that they really need in their schools."},{"start":"01:15:14:13","end":"","text":"I do like it. But it's still a little bit disempowering because you are rewarding them, right? Okay. So I would rather the language be about empowerment. Okay. handouts who want the schools to be able to feel like they are working on including themselves by earning the points and by they think they need."},{"start":"01:15:33:19","end":"","text":"So they are really the active people in this. We're not rewarding them, we're not giving them things. They are building their business. Empowering."},{"start":"01:15:49:03","end":"","text":"The reasons we do this right here. I can."},{"start":"01:15:54:13","end":"","text":"As an organization, we do not believe in giving handouts. So the reason we have this point and dollar program is to empower these ECD or ECD managers so that they with the effort that they put in, they're able to get things that they need for their school which at the end will benefit the children that they care for and that will of course go to reach our vision which is the chore for the children to thrive."},{"start":"01:16:25:19","end":"","text":"Really? I don't know. I think I messed it up a bit. That's all you need to say. Just do it again and believe in yourself because you said everything right. Okay."},{"start":"01:16:39:19","end":"","text":"Yeah, so just the same answer again. Okay, okay."},{"start":"01:16:44:12","end":"","text":"As an organization, we do not really believe in giving people handouts. So we do this incentive program which is the pendula to help empower the schools that we work with. This is of course when they are able to attend trainings, they get the knowledge and they are able to end points for that. With this point, they come back to us and buy things that they need which of course will help them to reach the goal that their school will be closer and closer to compliance and the children in their care will be able to thrive."},{"start":"01:17:26:07","end":"","text":"Now I'm just going to ask you one more. You can maybe help me figure out how we say this. So we would like to touch on the note that sometimes people are initially having these businesses just as a livelihood, right? But you've seen after your intervention that people are finding meaning in the business as well. So maybe you can tell me about that how when initially we approach these schools, sometimes we find that there is not a lot of purpose for care that's happening. But I've seen through the program, business owners becoming more proud and finding more meaning in the market. Okay."},{"start":"01:18:06:19","end":"","text":"Think about it how you actually experience how you feel about it. Uh-huh. Okay."},{"start":"01:18:23:12","end":"","text":"Okay."},{"start":"01:18:26:09","end":"","text":"Most of the ECTs we work with are in vulnerable places."},{"start":"01:18:31:14","end":"","text":"Oh, the aeroplane."},{"start":"01:18:34:03","end":"","text":"Okay."},{"start":"01:18:45:22","end":"","text":"So much more of the city is so loud. Thank you so much. You just come from village, right? No, you're not."},{"start":"01:18:55:02","end":"","text":"Look at this one. Yeah, baby."},{"start":"01:18:59:02","end":"","text":"That's nature. Uh-huh. The other ones are different."},{"start":"01:19:11:02","end":"","text":"After this part, we're going to be ready."},{"start":"01:19:14:24","end":"","text":"Uh-huh. Okay."},{"start":"01:19:21:24","end":"","text":"Many of the ECTs that we work with were ECTs that were opened by people who basically just simply loved children or wanted to make a living. So when we come into the space and we see the impact, they start growing, they start enjoying what they do, and of course the children thrive in their care because now they are more, uh... I don't know what I want to say. Cut. No problem. Okay? Okay. Maybe describe what is happening in the school before and now. And what's key in that difference is that not just the kids are getting better care, but the owners are also feeling, having more meaningful work. Okay."},{"start":"01:20:05:17","end":"","text":"Often we find them, because usually it sounds like both the owners and the kids are unstimulated. Yes."},{"start":"01:20:11:20","end":"","text":"Yeah."},{"start":"01:20:15:17","end":"","text":"Uh-huh."},{"start":"01:20:18:17","end":"","text":"Okay."},{"start":"01:20:22:06","end":"","text":"Yeah, they understand the importance of their work."},{"start":"01:20:25:24","end":"","text":"Like, just put it in a way that makes sense to me. Okay. I must say... You're finding it. I can see you're finding it. Okay. Okay. Okay."},{"start":"01:21:08:02","end":"","text":"Most of the ECD centers that we work with... When we come into a community, I have to go and do a school assessment."},{"start":"01:25:13:12","end":"","text":"With that school assessment, I'm assessing 115 criteria. Oh my God."},{"start":"01:25:43:10","end":"","text":"You can stay right where you are. Okay. You told me how you develop. You told me how you train."},{"start":"01:25:51:09","end":"","text":"Why do you think training the business owners is so important?"},{"start":"01:25:57:04","end":"","text":"Training the business owners, it's important, because most of them have opened ECDs out of just a lot of children, and maybe having owning land and just wanting to do something to end a living. So we come into those spaces because most of them do not know how to help a child to develop in the right way. They don't know how to run the business. So when we come, we walk along with them to make sure that we give them business skills to ensure that their businesses are operating in a way that's sustainable for them. They employ practitioners who are not auto-educated, so we come along and help them how to manage that stuff, how to do their filings and all the admins that are required in ECD center."},{"start":"01:26:46:20","end":"","text":"All of that is to ensure that the children they care for are able to drive, because we also do show them how to educate the children."},{"start":"01:26:58:16","end":"","text":"I don't know. Do you think about people working with them? People working with them? No, I let it run because then we can train people to do... I don't even know that's good enough. Do you find your role as a... Rather you don't move. I will move."},{"start":"01:27:24:09","end":"","text":"No, man. Whenever in college, they move."},{"start":"01:27:29:08","end":"","text":"I don't know."},{"start":"01:27:31:10","end":"","text":"Do you find the work you do as a regional manager meaningful?"},{"start":"01:27:37:05","end":"","text":"It is. A lot. Just to see them grow from one... Maybe repeat that back to you. I find my work as a regional manager meaningful because... I find my work as a regional manager meaningful because after walking a journey with the school owners, it gives me great joy to see them growing from one level to another and also making sure that the school is growing, the manager is also growing with the confidence in running the business, managing staff and managing all the things that are entailed in this business, ECT. I don't know. That was very good. I'm going to ask you again more specifically,"},{"start":"01:28:19:09","end":"","text":"how does it feel to see a business go from where you found it to maybe having a huge change after the intervention?"},{"start":"01:28:30:14","end":"","text":"Should I repeat what you said again? No, you can just say it's very special. Whatever your feeling is."},{"start":"01:28:40:02","end":"","text":"It gives me great joy and pleasure to see a school growing from one level to another. Just you know, the children thriving, them being in a safe and secure environment and also when the manager is confident in running the business with all that entails in running this ECT."},{"start":"01:29:02:07","end":"","text":"That was really good except you shook your head at the end. I don't know. I don't know."},{"start":"01:29:09:16","end":"","text":"Yeah, so just one more time. Okay. It brings you great joy. Yes. Okay."},{"start":"01:29:17:20","end":"","text":"It's just kids, yeah. It gives me great joy to see an ECT owner gaining the confidence in running their business when they got their own, their affairs in order, when they're able to run the office, when they're able to manage the staff well, and when the children at that ECT center are thriving. Because if the school owner has got it, then definitely the whole school will now struggle. Whether is it the practiceness, whether is it managing her office, everything will go smoothly and it gives me success when they grow from one level to another. Then I know that my job is done."},{"start":"01:29:58:04","end":"","text":"Wonderful. What do you think is possible if there could be more regional managers like you in different parts of the country?"},{"start":"01:30:07:13","end":"","text":"Wow. That will be a great win for us. So you can repeat that to me. Okay. Okay, say that again. Yeah. It would be a great win for us if there were more regional managers or if we were in more communities or something like that. Okay. It would mean a great win for us if we may see a whole lot of communities being able to, I don't know what I want to say. Let's start again."},{"start":"01:30:37:10","end":"","text":"Okay. It will mean a great win for us as Penn if we're able to go into other communities having other regional managers."},{"start":"01:30:48:05","end":"","text":"It's loud."},{"start":"01:30:50:07","end":"","text":"Okay."},{"start":"01:30:52:04","end":"","text":"So this one is more about it's great that the work is being done. We want to do more work. So you have great joy seeing these business owners grow, but your hope or your wish or your dream is that the work should grow even further than you. I as a regional manager, I'm so proud of the work I'm doing. I wish that we could go into more regions and they can be more people like me to make the work work."},{"start":"01:31:20:18","end":"","text":"That kind of line. You can think about it while you're in school."},{"start":"01:31:25:01","end":"","text":"Yeah, you can just go ahead. Okay. It will give us as Penn some, I don't know, I'm distracted now. Okay. You can just let them go. Let them go."},{"start":"01:31:48:24","end":"","text":"Okay."},{"start":"01:31:50:04","end":"","text":"Yeah, it would be a great win for us."},{"start":"01:31:59:22","end":"","text":"It will be a great win for us if we could see more regional managers in other communities as well. Because remember now our vision is that we see a South Africa where every child is able to learn and thrive. So that is our dream. That is our goal. So it will mean a great win for us if we're able to go into other communities where we've not yet been to and ensuring that the model goes into that and then we're able to give support in all the other city centers in other areas where we are needed."},{"start":"01:32:39:09","end":"","text":"Great. It's for me now, personally. Yeah."},{"start":"01:32:43:15","end":"","text":"One more time. Just for me, that's right. Especially for you."},{"start":"01:32:51:08","end":"","text":"What was I doing right there? For me personally now. No, no, no, no. No, no, no, no. We pinned you. We pinned you. Okay."},{"start":"01:32:59:24","end":"","text":"Okay. Okay. Yeah."},{"start":"01:33:02:21","end":"","text":"It will mean a great joy for us to see us going into other communities and be able to have regional managers there working in all the areas where we are needed the most. Because now that means our vision will come alive. We'll be able to live our vision every day across South Africa as our vision is that we see a South Africa where every child is able to thrive through access to quality, early childhood education. So that is our dream. That is our goal. That is where we want to see ourselves and across the entire South Africa."},{"start":"01:33:44:20","end":"","text":"You had a good feeling. So we might just start from the beginning. That's okay. Okay. You did it really well. Okay. It wasn't your fault. But now, the way things looked when I asked you who you were, now it might be two different. Okay, because of that. So I think you're just going to do it all over. Okay. Okay. Can you do this one again?"},{"start":"01:38:13:05","end":"","text":"How do you feel about creating hope for children through the work you do? That we are working with to see the children developing holistically."},{"start":"01:43:57:21","end":"","text":"Because sometimes when we visit the centers for the first time, we find the teacher or a practitioner just sitting with the children, doing nothing, just watching TV. We see that children are developing holistically."},{"start":"01:44:25:17","end":"","text":"It helps a lot. Sometimes they don't know nothing because most of them, they, you know, I'm using what I'm not supposed to put."},{"start":"01:44:33:14","end":"","text":"That's okay. Maybe you can speak more about, so you're mentioning that sometimes you go there and the practitioners, they don't care, they're not interested. Yes, they are. But you train these coaches. Maybe you can talk about how these coaches have become leaders in their community or become empowered through the program. Because I'm training the coaches and the coaches are training the teachers, the practitioners, and then the practitioners are working with the children. What we're doing is with the coaches. So maybe I can ask more specific, it's so wonderful to see the coaches improve, all the relationships to grow between coaches and practitioners, etc."},{"start":"01:45:19:01","end":"","text":"Okay, because I was saying..."},{"start":"01:45:29:12","end":"","text":"Because I was having something like... I started to talk about the kids, like, seeing the children reach developmental stages."},{"start":"01:45:46:10","end":"","text":"It brings a profound sense of joy and relief because it shows that the teachers are implementing what the coaches are teaching them in our lesson plan and in our trainings. It validates our work."},{"start":"01:46:04:14","end":"","text":"I don't know how to... Perfect. That was perfect."},{"start":"01:46:09:10","end":"","text":"Yeah, it is. We are done. Yes, that was exactly the one side needed from you."},{"start":"01:46:16:16","end":"","text":"Are we done? Oh, I have to start again and then start nicely. No, you said it well. There was no issue there, right?"},{"start":"01:46:24:07","end":"","text":"Yeah, it's validating. Yeah, it was perfect."},{"start":"01:46:28:23","end":"","text":"Easier than you thought. You see, even when I'm saying it's good."},{"start":"01:46:32:23","end":"","text":"So sometimes that's where you find really nice things and people are trying to get in the zone. Sometimes it's a bit of a connection. So just do one long take, even if it's a 15 minute thing that take is 25. Okay, I did not do that, were they? I saw it, it's fine."},{"start":"01:46:47:24","end":"","text":"Okay. Yeah, so you're gonna tell me what you do as a project manager for Penn."},{"start":"01:46:54:23","end":"","text":"Come again, I'm starting from the second question. Oh, I guess you said you move into community training coach, whatever. Okay, yeah, so then how does one move into a new community? When we move into new communities, the first thing we do is to build trust. Let's wait for this vehicle, sorry. Oh, and also, sir, even if we share a bus, a bus again. Yes, just continue. Okay, go to Penn, okay."},{"start":"01:47:17:16","end":"","text":"Okay. Go back now. Okay, okay. It's via Penn. And we have got a lot of things that we get from Penn. Without Penn, we might not move anyway. So Penn, we just pray that it's here to stay and to see us grow, not only from crash, but to have the great hour from next year. When we see you guys, we see all the professionalism that we need to get a successful registration process. That's beautiful to you. And thank you so much for sharing that. So with Pen, we have got the Pendula projects, which we don't miss every workshop. We attempt to get a point so that at the end we get material. Previously, we got materials for the fire extinguisher. Yes, we're going to have to do it again. We're going to have to do it again. I'm sorry, Simon. No, this is... Too much traffic in Karmachar. That's why they don't cut. Just look. We don't allow the cars to get inside because we might have a problem. There's a lot of congestion there. But let's be patient. I'm also patient. I'm a patient. So my question to you is in the short time that you've been with us with Pen as well as starting your daycare center, what changes have you seen in your professionalization and growth with Pen? And yeah, how has it helped you go along on this journey? Since I started from day one, that is the 14th of January, Pen has become handy to my programs. Both academically, they've come to interact with my teachers, then also to improve my office as an administrator to have professional documents that are needed. Then besides that, every week, we have got the trainings. Okay. Can you tell me more about PenDula and the toy library? How has that helped you on this journey? The PenDula has come at the right time to our center. Remember, as a starting center, we don't have the requirements to be recognized for a successful registration. We got the fire extinguisher from the PenDula points, and we also got the Red Cross kit from the same programs. So this program for Pen is a worthwhile project that we support. The three pathways again? Okay. So we want to achieve this vision by following three pathways. We are working with daycare center owners. They're the business owners. We are training and empowering them. We work with the practitioners or the teachers that they employ to look after the children. And most of the people that we are working with did not even finish school themselves. And most of them have no qualifications at all. Those are the people that we are training so that we can impact the children that they are caring for. And that is our third pathway to make a difference to the children."},{"start":"02:20:22:22","end":"","text":"Wonderful, Maria. How does it feel to have seen this model be replicable at such scale?"},{"start":"02:20:32:12","end":"","text":"Every time we start in a new community, we move in with so much hope because here we can make a difference to another two or three thousand children. The moment we get access to a new community, we are also employing staff from within the community. We are empowering them to be teachers and leaders in the community with their basic low level qualifications in early childhood development. We're empowering them. They speak the language of the people in the community. They understand the specific challenges of that community and they become our access to the people that we serve."},{"start":"02:21:12:04","end":"","text":"That's really good. That's really good. I think let's do that one again every time we enter a new community."},{"start":"02:21:19:05","end":"","text":"So what was your question again? I was just like, how does it feel? I really like your answer here because every time we go into a new community, that's basically the perfect thing for a family. They're like, oh, I myself could impact thousands more children, create jobs, all that kind of stuff."},{"start":"02:21:38:21","end":"","text":"So the question is, what's the hope, right? Yeah. The hope of our model lies in the fact that every time we get access to a new community, we are going to reach another three or four thousand children."},{"start":"02:21:56:11","end":"","text":"We also are doing job creation. We are employing practitioners from the community who we are training to become the people that empower the other teachers in that community."},{"start":"02:22:08:22","end":"","text":"We're empowering the daycare center owners to run more effective businesses. And by doing all of that, we are reaching and empowering the lives of children to get them ready for school. There is such joy and such satisfaction in moving into new daycares that we go into every time we get this access. We get to 30 more daycares. And that's what this model is all about. Every community gives us access to another 30 daycares."},{"start":"02:22:38:16","end":"","text":"Have I given you an answer that works?"},{"start":"02:22:45:22","end":"","text":"That was perfect. The problem was that there was a taxi."},{"start":"02:22:56:22","end":"","text":"Damn!"},{"start":"02:22:59:21","end":"","text":"So just exactly what she said. Don't ask me to do that exactly!"},{"start":"02:23:03:22","end":"","text":"What I like is top down. You kind of did it in a circle, which was perfect. But yeah, I like ending on the kids. So we create jobs, we create businesses, but more than anything. 30 more centers means thousands more kids. I think that's a really strong idea. Okay, cool."},{"start":"02:23:25:22","end":"","text":"Yeah. Hope for the program."},{"start":"02:23:30:05","end":"","text":"The joy for us is every single time we get access to a new community, we have access to 30 more daycare center owners, probably 90 more practitioners, and probably 3 or 4,000 more children. And the joy that we experience when we get this access is that we first of all, we employ staff. We employ 3 people from the community who we employ from the very daycares that we want to uplift. We are empowering them with passion, skills and knowledge to be able to become the person that facilitates growth in that community. They can speak the language of the community, they know the real challenges of the community, so they are able to support from their hearts."},{"start":"02:24:19:20","end":"","text":"And we are then empowering daycare owners to run a more effective business that enables them to grow and be more successful. We are empowering practitioners who are simply given a job to babysit, to realize that this can be so much fun and that I can really make a difference to other people's lives. And then if we do all of that right, we are able to reach 3 or 4,000 more children. And that's what our vision is about, is changing the lives of children from birth to 6 years."},{"start":"02:24:53:05","end":"","text":"Very nice. That coffee? Did you hear it?"},{"start":"02:24:58:16","end":"","text":"Okay. How do you jugs these three?"},{"start":"02:25:02:11","end":"","text":"Do you feel like I've shared the heart? Your rest of the team, do you feel like she has explained the problem? She has, but not here."},{"start":"02:25:22:05","end":"","text":"No, no, no, I'm saying you're checking her work. I'm asking you to check her work. She's mentioned everything. This is the year for today. Let's not everything you'll find out on Friday, because I might just get when I'm going through things late. Yeah, we're going to review it. Hundreds."},{"start":"02:25:42:05","end":"","text":"Because like you said, while we're still here, let's take advantage of it. Yes, no, no, you've got to use us. You've got us. Every minute of their time is money, guys. We're going to use them to the last till they can't anymore."},{"start":"02:26:01:09","end":"","text":"No, no, no, she's saying, she's asking if we've convinced you to start another support centre. I would invite you to my community. Yeah."},{"start":"02:26:10:22","end":"","text":"I'm going to ask you. Okay. All right. Cool beans. That was a mic check."},{"start":"02:26:20:21","end":"","text":"All right. And where do you want? Must I look at the camera? Okay, cool. Great. That's awesome. With who you are and what you do."},{"start":"02:26:30:09","end":"","text":"My name is Maria Nienauber and I am the team leader of Penn Young Children. All right. We are here in Steelport today in one of the schools you support. You guys are doing work creating access to ECDs. Can you tell me a bit about that?"},{"start":"02:26:46:04","end":"","text":"So at Penn Young Children we have a vision. We see a South Africa where every child is able to thrive through access to quality early childhood development."},{"start":"02:26:57:24","end":"","text":"This vision is because we have a heart for the tens of thousands of children who are not getting quality access to early childhood development. The birth to six year old phase of a child's development and they are going into school unprepared for the demands of the curriculum. That's where our vision was born. Tens of thousands of children are not getting this access."},{"start":"02:27:23:07","end":"","text":"So we have created a model that enables us to come alongside these children because we know that 95% of a child's brain is developed in its first five years."},{"start":"02:27:35:24","end":"","text":"Maria's phone is not on silent."},{"start":"02:27:38:24","end":"","text":"Come on. Come on. Come on. It's okay. There's some other adjustments. How do you put your phone on silent? I was like what? What's happening?"},{"start":"02:27:50:00","end":"","text":"This is how you catch balls like you do. So normally it takes at least three. So I know why. I feel like you're leaning a bit to look at me. So I just, yeah. Be straight as well. I just want to ask you the glasses."},{"start":"02:28:02:24","end":"","text":"They are reflecting a bit but I don't think it's the problem."},{"start":"02:28:08:02","end":"","text":"You always wear these glasses. I always wear them."},{"start":"02:28:10:04","end":"","text":"(Non-english Speech)"},{"start":"02:28:42:12","end":"","text":"(Non-english Speech)"},{"start":"02:29:12:12","end":"","text":"(Non-english Speech)"},{"start":"02:29:58:18","end":"","text":"(Non-english Speech)"},{"start":"02:30:22:16","end":"","text":"Alright, Maria, you can just start with who you are and what your role is at Penn. My name is Maria Ninava and I am the team leader of Penn Young Children."},{"start":"02:30:36:06","end":"","text":"What is Penn Young Children's vision?"},{"start":"02:30:39:24","end":"","text":"We see a South Africa where every child is able to thrive through access to quality early childhood development. Do you want to say we have a vision?"},{"start":"02:30:51:01","end":"","text":"At Penn Young Children we have a vision. It is that we see a South Africa where every child is able to thrive through access to quality early childhood development. Can I just take a check on my pen?"},{"start":"02:31:09:06","end":"","text":"There's just too much wind."},{"start":"02:31:12:22","end":"","text":"Maybe the fluff fell."},{"start":"02:31:16:07","end":"","text":"Where did we clip it? Oh, it's too close to here. Oh, we have the correct clip now, right? Yeah. Okay, let's use that one. Move it to the right. No, no, two. Because I think it's coming into the shirt, so if you just do the other side, then it will shield it. So where?"},{"start":"02:31:36:07","end":"","text":"Oh, do it to... So instead of the left, just the right. Because then the wind will come over here. It's going into the... No, it was... It was... So you say we move it to the left? To the left, not to the right. Yeah, so her left... Yes."},{"start":"02:31:48:10","end":"","text":"To the left, to the... So you'll just clip it to the side."},{"start":"02:31:53:16","end":"","text":"Yeah, because there is coming into the shirt. Okay. Oh, that's a message."},{"start":"02:32:01:16","end":"","text":"Do you want to take it? It's okay."},{"start":"02:32:05:19","end":"","text":"Oh. That's a message."},{"start":"02:32:08:16","end":"","text":"Do you have the other clip now? Yes, ma'am. Okay."},{"start":"02:32:15:23","end":"","text":"It's okay. I'm just going to dream about that clip."},{"start":"02:32:20:22","end":"","text":"It's okay. It's okay. It's okay. It's okay. It's okay. It's okay. It's okay. It's okay. Isn't it wonderful when your problems are as big as a clip?"},{"start":"02:32:29:05","end":"","text":"It's okay. It's okay. I don't even know why we love to do this. It's okay. She's traumatized. She's traumatized. She's traumatized. She's traumatized. She's traumatized. She's traumatized."},{"start":"02:32:38:08","end":"","text":"She's traumatized. I'm a nique."},{"start":"02:32:42:07","end":"","text":"Okay. Yeah, that's how we cook. So, who are you and what is your role at Penn? My name is Maria Ninaba and I'm the team leader of Penn Young Children."},{"start":"02:32:53:18","end":"","text":"Great. What is Penn Young Children's vision? At Penn Young Children, we have a vision. We see a South Africa where every child is able to thrive through access to quality early childhood development."},{"start":"02:33:08:18","end":"","text":"What conditions created the need for this vision?"},{"start":"02:33:14:07","end":"","text":"Everything for two seconds."},{"start":"02:33:17:13","end":"","text":"You said it in your first sentence. Yeah, okay. Yeah, that's fine."},{"start":"02:33:22:22","end":"","text":"So, you want to skip it? No."},{"start":"02:33:24:22","end":"","text":"So, you basically just said that there are thousands of children who don't have access to these? Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So, this vision was born from it."},{"start":"02:33:33:07","end":"","text":"This vision was born out of the context in which we find ourselves where we see tens of thousands of children who are not getting access to quality early childhood development. There's not the right support for them and they are going into our school systems unprepared for the challenges of school."},{"start":"02:33:55:23","end":"","text":"How is Penn Young Children going to change South Africa? It's not the same."},{"start":"02:34:04:18","end":"","text":"You want to answer that? Let me try and then you'll take what you want, right? Yeah."},{"start":"02:34:09:20","end":"","text":"Penn Young Children wants to change education for the young children of South Africa, the ones that are in the most challenged communities who don't have access to good early childhood development. We want to give them what they need so that they have equal chance to thrive along with other children who have been more privileged."},{"start":"02:34:33:12","end":"","text":"So, you've developed a model. How does this model work?"},{"start":"02:34:37:11","end":"","text":"So, we've developed a model, a model that we have tried out in different communities and we feel that this model can work absolutely anywhere. So, we move into a community. We set up an early childhood development centre where we come alongside the daycare centre owners, the practitioners who they employ. We help them to learn and grow so that the children can thrive."},{"start":"02:35:02:05","end":"","text":"And ideally, the model wants to have four communities within a region, within a sort of 200 kilometre radius of each other that is managed by a regional manager that can oversee 30 daycares at each of those four communities. So, that is what we are trying to replicate. We've already got two regions up and running and two others started."},{"start":"02:35:28:14","end":"","text":"Wonderful."},{"start":"02:35:31:12","end":"","text":"I think I want to do it again."},{"start":"02:35:35:03","end":"","text":"Also, just want to add, maybe you shouldn't give specific like we've already got to. Yeah, I was going to say that as well. Yes. But you don't have to use that stuff, right? If I say the wrong thing. Yes. We've got you there, we've got you there. Yeah."},{"start":"02:35:48:07","end":"","text":"Don't worry. Yeah. So, just how does the model work basically? We have a funder that helps us move through communities. We have a regional manager. Yeah. Okay."},{"start":"02:36:04:08","end":"","text":"Yeah. So, we've developed a model that we feel we can replicate anywhere in South Africa. We work with funder donor partners and we establish an early childhood development centre in a community where we come alongside the day care centre owners, the practitioners who they employ. We help them to learn and grow so that the children can thrive."},{"start":"02:36:28:15","end":"","text":"Ideally, we would like to establish regions with four support centres within about a 200 kilometre radius of each other that is run or overseen by a regional manager. We employ three coaches in each of the individual support centres and each support centre can come alongside more or less 30 informal day cares."},{"start":"02:36:51:05","end":"","text":"Yes. That was perfect."},{"start":"02:36:53:14","end":"","text":"What are the three pathways? We work with three pathways."},{"start":"02:36:57:10","end":"","text":"So, our model works with three pathways. The first one is that we are trying to help the day cares that we serve to get closer to compliance with the Department of Basic Education. And to get that right, we are working with the day care centre owners."},{"start":"02:37:13:23","end":"","text":"The second pathway is that the practitioners who we are training are mostly unqualified people. We want to help them to become more professional so that the children learn and don't just receive babysitting services. So we are professionalising these unqualified practitioners that we are training."},{"start":"02:37:35:18","end":"","text":"And then the third pathway is that we want to reach children. That's what the vision is all about. And we can reach thousands of practitioners to train in order to reach tens of thousands of children."},{"start":"02:37:51:22","end":"","text":"Was that okay? Did that cover the pathways? I think so. Yeah, we might just do it again because of the weather. But she said it exactly as I said. So no, no. So you want me to do all three pathways again? Yes, please. Yeah, just so it's consistent."},{"start":"02:38:08:11","end":"","text":"So with the model that we have developed, there are three pathways that we follow. The first pathway is helping the day cares to get closer towards compliance with the requirements of the Department of Basic Education. And to get that right, we are working with the day care centre owners."},{"start":"02:38:26:02","end":"","text":"The second pathway is that the practitioners who are employed to look after the children are very often babysitters with no qualifications. And we want to teach them what children need to learn during their early childhood development years. So we train them and take them closer to being professional and ideally inspire them to the point that they want to go out and become qualified early childhood development teachers."},{"start":"02:38:54:16","end":"","text":"And then the third pathway is really what our vision is about. We want to reach children all over South Africa."},{"start":"02:39:02:13","end":"","text":"And we are able to train thousands of practitioners in order to reach tens of thousands of children. So that is our third pathway."},{"start":"02:39:13:06","end":"","text":"Excellent."},{"start":"02:39:15:06","end":"","text":"What happens when you move into a community?"},{"start":"02:39:20:17","end":"","text":"When we move into a new community, the first task that we have and probably the part that takes the longest to get going is that we have to build relationship. We need to earn people's trust. We map the community. We find out what is happening there. We find out where these day cares are often hidden in back streets, behind houses. And we go and introduce ourselves and gradually earn people's trust. And once we have their trust, we invite them to come and join us and to come and experience lesson planning or training at our support centre. And once we've got the first five day care centre owners on our side, it rapidly multiplies from there."},{"start":"02:40:13:14","end":"","text":"In order to train our practitioners and day care owners in terms of quality education, we have come alongside or educational partners have come alongside us. It really empower us to teach quality education with the right materials for these day cares that have absolutely nothing in many instances. So the educational partners that we are working with is firstly ASAP, who has established a wonderful toy library, which is duplicated in all the communities that we serve. These toy libraries are key to our work because they enable us to teach the practitioners to work with children in the way that they learn. Doing things with equipment in their hands, building, breaking down, constructing, threading, writing, gross motor equipment, all of this is in our toy libraries, as well as games and activities that develop the children cognitively. So with the toy library, we have equipment for 30 day cares enough to get out into the 30 day cares that we serve in that community."},{"start":"02:41:22:08","end":"","text":"So that's probably our most critical educational partner. From there we work with Care for Education."},{"start":"02:41:29:08","end":"","text":"We give training in how to use Duplo, Lego blocks, across the curriculum. And once we have given the training and given proof to Care for Education that we've done that, they provide the most wonderful boxes of Duplo to our day cares so that they can implement this program that we teach daily."},{"start":"02:41:50:01","end":"","text":"And then we work with another funder that makes it possible for us to put a program called Sounds into the day cares. It covers everything. That is in the preparation for reading part of the early childhood development curriculum."},{"start":"02:42:06:06","end":"","text":"We also have a partner that works with us on a maths program called Mickey Maths, which again enables us to teach the practitioners to facilitate maths lessons in the way that children in early childhood development learn. It's wonderful, practical, hands on and they get books and equipment in order to implement that."},{"start":"02:42:28:07","end":"","text":"And then the next one is Living Kids, which is a program that develops the, it's a gross motor program that comes with all the equipment needed to implement the activities. And we, many of our day cares in many of our communities have received this training. And gross motor development is key to the development of a child in this early phase of their development."},{"start":"02:42:52:12","end":"","text":"And then the last one is our newest partner, StartWell. And they have a vision to eradicate malnutrition in South Africa and have developed the most wonderful high protein breakfast cereal. And we are gradually bringing this into all of our communities so that our children can thrive by starting off with daily, a daily healthy protein filled meal. So those are the educational partners that we're currently working with."},{"start":"02:43:22:20","end":"","text":"Did I do six? You did all of that off the dome. It was six, was it? Okay. Toy library sounds, Duplo, Mickey Maths, Living Kids starts and off. Okay. I really thought I was going to have to help. I imagine you don't even give five. He's a program manager for a reason. Yeah, awesome. Okay."},{"start":"02:43:36:15","end":"","text":"What is PennDula and how do you guys decide what PennDula stocks?"},{"start":"02:43:48:03","end":"","text":"We firmly believe that we do not give handouts to anybody that we serve. We reward people for effort and for growth. And we've developed a system that we call the PennDula program."},{"start":"02:44:01:05","end":"","text":"So basically our daycare center owners get points for growth. So if their daycare go up a level in their assessments, they get points. If they attend lesson planning, they get points. If they attend training, they get points because they're applying efforts. And more or less twice a year, we convert those points to what we call PennDula, Penn money. And they can use that money to buy essential equipment for their daycares."},{"start":"02:44:30:12","end":"","text":"We gather the items for our PennDula store from partners, from donors, from schools, churches. And we ask people to collect things for us, anything that a child needs between birth and six years old. And those are the items that become part of the PennDula program. And if we get money donations, we buy what we know the daycares need, things like tables and chairs, sometimes fire extinguishers or first aid kits, educational equipment, whatever might be necessary for young children goes into that PennDula store. And this is our way of getting essential equipment into the daycares where there is often absolutely nothing."},{"start":"02:45:17:03","end":"","text":"Awesome."},{"start":"02:45:20:21","end":"","text":"And then I do want to end on the emotion. So before that, we're just going to do our kind of like our final line, which is going to be maybe like, thank you for hearing our story."},{"start":"02:45:34:17","end":"","text":"What kind of quality action do we want? You would actually help me out. What did we say in that lovely shot you got in Stillput? You've seen what we can do, help us do it more or something like that. You've seen what man can help us. Because we need to put something that will go before that, right? Because that was, I like that little moment. Yeah, but it was too short. I think we need like an also like a like a just a more formal one of like, you know. So thank you for hearing our story. And if you are interested in walking this or, you know, walking this road with us. Yeah."},{"start":"02:46:07:09","end":"","text":"If there's any part of our story you think you could be part of, maybe. Yeah. We look forward to hearing from you."},{"start":"02:46:15:20","end":"","text":"Because there's some ways that you can help."},{"start":"02:46:20:21","end":"","text":"So yeah, you know, someone can even donate a fire extinguisher or something. So it's kind of like, you don't have to find the whole community. You can help him in any way."},{"start":"02:46:32:14","end":"","text":"Oh, where? What's your friend?"},{"start":"02:46:35:13","end":"","text":"Taking out steel which is going to make the mix. Let's try and see."},{"start":"02:46:40:20","end":"","text":"Let's see. Okay. Yeah. Do you have an idea? I'll try."},{"start":"02:46:49:21","end":"","text":"We've shared our story with you. And if there is any part of the story that has touched you and, you know, that you could identify with and would like to know more about and walk the road with us, you know where to get hold of us."},{"start":"02:47:05:06","end":"","text":"Great. Let's do it again."},{"start":"02:47:07:15","end":"","text":"It was nice. Yeah, I think just again. Maybe just say there are so many ways to get involved. Yeah. That's a good idea. Yeah. Okay."},{"start":"02:47:27:16","end":"","text":"We've tried to share our story with you. And if there was any part of the story that spoke to you, there are so many different ways that friends, partners, donors can get involved. If any of what we have doing speaks to you, we look forward to meeting with you and talking further."},{"start":"02:47:45:04","end":"","text":"Yeah. Nice to have you. Yeah, but I think it's a good idea."},{"start":"02:47:48:10","end":"","text":"Yeah, but yeah, it's missing something. Yeah."},{"start":"02:47:53:01","end":"","text":"See, tell me what's new. You told me you could help me here, guys. Yeah, I'm thinking like maybe instead of like talking to you or like hearing from you, I think let's already treat them like like we look forward to partnering with you. Okay. Okay. I think I like the start from the story. You've seen what Penn can do. And if. If it's just that sometimes I don't know. And also maybe it's just that I'm a hard seller. I don't know. But like that if you feel for me, also, I don't like it. I want something that's safe. Do it. Yeah, exactly. Like something strong."},{"start":"02:48:30:16","end":"","text":"Something. Yeah. The same with the same. Like directness. Like, yeah. Don't say we tried to know. Yeah. You've heard our story. Yeah. You've seen what we can do. If you want to be part of the change. Like if to be part of. Yeah. The this beautiful work that we're doing. You can. Yeah. Then we look forward to. Or can I just say, come and join us. Come and be part of this. You know. Yeah. We can. Rather. With the whole sentence. The right. Yes. Okay."},{"start":"02:49:03:03","end":"","text":"Okay. Maybe let's let. Let's see what this is. Let's see what this is. Let's see what this is. Let's see what this is. Let's see what this is. Let's see what this is. Let's see what this is. Let's see what this is."},{"start":"02:49:14:23","end":"","text":"No."},{"start":"02:49:17:16","end":"","text":"We've shared our story with you. And we've got so many different ways. In which friends, partners, donors can get involved. Come on board. Come and join us in this journey of change."},{"start":"02:49:31:19","end":"","text":"They deliver. But the words are fine. So delivery just. Even harder. No, no, not harder. Like the pauses. Just that. The words perfect. Words perfect."},{"start":"02:49:44:10","end":"","text":"What must I do differently?"},{"start":"02:49:46:19","end":"","text":"More confident. Yes."},{"start":"02:49:50:23","end":"","text":"Don't think. Just say."},{"start":"02:49:53:15","end":"","text":"No, we just maybe do it two more times and we take the better. Okay. So exactly the same."},{"start":"02:50:01:12","end":"","text":"We've shared our story with you. There are so many different ways in which partners, donors, friends can get involved."},{"start":"02:50:10:09","end":"","text":"Come and join us on this journey of change."},{"start":"02:50:39:23","end":"","text":"Oh yeah, he's with a foot. Am I the right place?"},{"start":"02:50:46:01","end":"","text":"Now the track's gonna go. Oh no, it's perfect."},{"start":"02:50:50:10","end":"","text":"So yes, exactly the same. You're exactly the words. Just one last word."},{"start":"02:51:09:24","end":"","text":"Also the only time I realize that my people speak so loud is when I'm doing sounds. Because why is he shouting, \"They're not eating today?\""},{"start":"02:51:18:23","end":"","text":"That's how it is. I know. That's me and you, Jens. I know. Always shouting at each other. I know."},{"start":"02:51:29:10","end":"","text":"We've shared our story with you. There are so many ways in which friends, partners, donors can become part of this story."},{"start":"02:51:38:23","end":"","text":"Come and join us on this journey of change."},{"start":"02:51:45:04","end":"","text":"Very good. Okay, and then last one. When don't cut us, when don't us. Yeah, so does it now. Oh yeah, and this is just a personal one. How does it feel for you Maria to be changing the lives of children and stuff? Can you give yourself a second to... Yeah."},{"start":"02:52:07:15","end":"","text":"No child chose to be born."},{"start":"02:52:10:20","end":"","text":"And no child deserves to be disadvantaged in any way."},{"start":"02:52:16:05","end":"","text":"And with what we're doing at Penn Young Children, we are able to give children who would not normally get an opportunity. The opportunity to grow and to thrive and to get through school and not to be one of the children that drops out along the way. That's what brings me joy every single day. I'll take it with the loon. Yeah. I'll take it with the loon. Yeah. I think that's everything."},{"start":"02:52:44:13","end":"","text":"Maria, I'm very happy to... Are you sure? Have we covered it? You said I'm the director. Are you the director? No, you're the director. Okay. Then that's a wrap."},{"start":"02:52:56:23","end":"","text":"Boy, is there anything I'm sad about is that we've done with you guys."},{"start":"02:53:01:06","end":"","text":"It's not safe and so on, but it's a place where people don't want to go to because of safety. Yeah, start from as a coach. Start from as a coach. Okay, as a coach, what I do is to work close with the teachers. Okay, so how do we improve the life of the children? Because we don't necessarily work with the children exactly. So what we do, we're closer with the teachers, because it's them who are with them, like, every day than us. So we are helping the teachers to understand how does the development of children works."},{"start":"02:57:51:23","end":"","text":"And then we are showing them activities according to their developmental stages."},{"start":"02:58:00:16","end":"","text":"Yeah. How do you go about doing the lesson planning? So lesson planning, it's done once a week, every week. So what we do, we sit down with the teachers, we brainstorm together, and then we come up with activities that they are going to do, like, every day, like the theme takes one week. So we break down the theme, and then we're helping them to come up with activities for each and every day according to their age groups."},{"start":"02:58:31:20","end":"","text":"Yes, and then we try by all means to do things practical and fun as well. Because sometimes when you do things by just telling them that, \"Man, they are going to do this. Choose they are going to do,\" sometimes they miss a lot, because, like, maybe they didn't even understand what I was talking about. So we try by all means to do things practical with them, and then we make things to be fun so that they can enjoy as well. Because if they are not enjoying themselves, then nothing is going to happen when they go to their classrooms."},{"start":"02:59:07:17","end":"","text":"Awesome. So how do you know it's working? I understand you guys do some sort of assessments. Yeah, so we do coaching. So we go out, like, each and every day."},{"start":"02:59:20:19","end":"","text":"We make sure, maybe we visit one school twice, maybe a month. So we go into their classrooms. We're actually making something like, maybe a follow-up on the lesson plan that we've been doing. So we go to the classrooms. We start by observing how are they doing, how are they implementing what we're talking about on the lesson planning. And then we sit down with them. If there's anything that we see that they have to change, and then we sit with them, and then we discuss whatever that we have seen, that, \"Can you please change this? Can you please change this?\" Sometimes it's not about telling them to change, because we are also learning a lot from them. So sometimes it's about maybe asking, \"I saw you doing this and this and this,\" and then they can give you a reason. And then they're learning something, maybe we can pass it to others as well."},{"start":"03:00:16:09","end":"","text":"And you assist the children as well? Yes, we do. So we do child assessment twice, twice a year, same assessment twice a year. So it's the beginning of the end, the end of the year. What does that look like? How does the child assessment look like? Child assessment is checking on the children's development cognitively, and then their cross-motor skills, and then we are also checking their language. Yes."},{"start":"03:00:51:17","end":"","text":"So I'm sure you've seen... I don't know how long you've been doing this, but I'm sure you've seen a change with the intervention. Maybe you can tell me about how it feels to see children that maybe before were not getting a lot of help, start to drive."},{"start":"03:01:11:01","end":"","text":"Yes."},{"start":"03:01:12:20","end":"","text":"I like it."},{"start":"03:01:15:03","end":"","text":"It's a very good feeling, yes. It's a very good feeling, because it gives you that thing that what you are doing has an impact on the children."},{"start":"03:01:25:17","end":"","text":"And again, it's not about us only. It's about the teachers as well, because they are the ones who are doing a lot. Because we are only transferring our knowledge to the teachers, and then the teachers are transferring whatever to the children. So it's not about us exactly. We are happy that our teachers are implementing what we are teaching them. Do you feel like..."},{"start":"03:01:51:23","end":"","text":"(Speaking In Foreign Language) Okay. (Speaking In Foreign Language) From where?"},{"start":"03:02:03:04","end":"","text":"From... And then seeing children doing good compared to what we have seen at first. Yeah. And it's not about us always. Like we are doing most of the work. It's not us, it's the teachers. So it's so exciting that the teachers are implementing what we are teaching them. Yeah. So..."},{"start":"03:02:40:04","end":"","text":"Are you proud of the work you do? I'm very proud. Very proud."},{"start":"03:02:46:08","end":"","text":"I'm very proud."},{"start":"03:02:50:17","end":"","text":"Okay, yes. The last question."},{"start":"03:02:56:12","end":"","text":"(Speaking In Foreign Language)"},{"start":"03:03:08:17","end":"","text":"So, yeah. So what makes me proud?"},{"start":"03:03:12:17","end":"","text":"It's the impact that we are doing with the teachers. Like the results that we see in schools, with the children, and with the teachers as well. So, yeah. That's very exciting. And again, with the work that I'm doing, it's not just about me transferring the information to other people. It also helps me as a parent. And then it also helps me personally."},{"start":"03:03:44:16","end":"","text":"Because like being a coach, it's not something that is written somewhere that there's a position for. Like there's a career for becoming a coach. Yeah, it takes..."},{"start":"03:03:58:12","end":"","text":"I don't know how long for you to say, \"I'm a coach now.\" Yeah, so it grows like a crew. A lot, a lot, a lot. I learned a lot. And then again, there are things that I was not able to access as a child. So surprisingly, we get excited sometimes when we're doing things that are actually meant for children. But I get excited. It's actually... They say it's therapeutic. Yeah."},{"start":"03:04:34:17","end":"","text":"Beautiful."},{"start":"03:04:37:16","end":"","text":"Are you happy? Here."},{"start":"03:04:41:01","end":"","text":"Are you good? We are good. Are you good?"},{"start":"03:04:45:04","end":"","text":"I don't know. I don't know. Ah, ah, I'm good. You look like a kid."},{"start":"03:04:51:19","end":"","text":"No, no. We're open to hearing, Tila. No, like, yeah."},{"start":"03:04:56:21","end":"","text":"Maybe what I can say is that another thing that is exciting. We know our coach is like, \"We carry, we carry bags with all those educational toys and so on when you are going to school.\" So that feeling when you get to school and then children will be like, \"Teach, teacher.\" It's like now we are here to do the undoables. But actually, the undoable is that the teachers need somebody to unlock that thing that they know already. So we are just there to say, \"Hey, we already know this.\""},{"start":"03:05:29:17","end":"","text":"Yeah. We make them like to be sure that this is the correct-- because they know what to do actually, but they are not sure that this is exactly what I'm supposed to do. So yeah, it feels so good going to schools and you get that feeling. And you also find those teachers, like when you come in, they already have those questions, \"I came across this. How can I do this?\" Such things make us to be excited. Unlike going to a school where you will find the teachers just sitting, doing nothing, you don't even know where to start."},{"start":"03:06:04:18","end":"","text":"So I think lesson cleanings, they also make teachers like to loosen up. Like when times go, they attend maybe twice, four times, maybe by the fifth time when you visit them, and then you'll see them start asking questions and so on. But there are those teachers who won't just change. So yeah, so it's not the kind of people that we don't want to work with. We want to work with, yeah. But we don't stop. We don't stop. Even if they are like dead, we don't stop. We push. We push because at the end of the day, it's not about them, it's about these little ones."},{"start":"03:06:47:17","end":"","text":"That's nice. You spoke a lot about the teachers. But I think maybe let's speak more about the little ones. So maybe you can tell me, when you're doing these assessments and stuff and you see a child improve, what's that like knowing that if you guys hadn't gotten involved, that maybe this child wouldn't be doing as well? Let's talk about the kids. Like how does it feel when I see a child improving?"},{"start":"03:07:13:17","end":"","text":"Yeah, let's talk about the impact on the children. What do you see happen as these kids get this ECT?"},{"start":"03:07:21:20","end":"","text":"Like I don't get the question exactly."},{"start":"03:07:25:17","end":"","text":"The question is like what is the impact on the children, right?"},{"start":"03:07:30:14","end":"","text":"So you can say that I'm seeing them get better at their motor skills, I'm seeing them get more curious about the world, things like that. Yeah, okay. What actually do you see happening?"},{"start":"03:07:41:17","end":"","text":"Okay, so most of the times like children are struggling when it comes to language."},{"start":"03:07:51:07","end":"","text":"When it comes to language. So like it gets very excited like when you go for your second assessment and then you see that there's a lot of improvement on this child. Like now it gives that thing that they are going to do better at school compared to what they were at first. So it gives you that positive feeling that they are going to do better at school."},{"start":"03:08:23:23","end":"","text":"Happy, unique?"},{"start":"03:08:26:15","end":"","text":"Cool, done for your best.
